John Schreiner

John Schreiner’s passion for wine has resulted in him leading a double life. TheSaskatchewan native had a 40-year career as a business writer with The Financial Post. A 1974 trip to Napa Valley’s Robert Mondavi led him to rethink his career, leading him todevelop a parallel gig as a wine writer. His first wine columns appeared in The Financial Post and Vancouver Magazine.
Since his beginnings as a wine columnist, John has authored numerous bestselling winebooks. The first of 10 was The World of Canadian Wines, published in 1984. The Wineries of British Columbia, Second Edition, was published by Whitecap Books in October 2004, selling over 10 000 copies. It replaced the first edition, published in 1994 by Orca BookPublishers.
British Columbia Wine Country, of which 12,000 copies have been sold, was published in March 2003. It won a World Gourmand Award for photography, a gold medal in the 2004Vancouver Magazine Awards, and two silver medals in the 2004 Cuisine Canada competition. The book has been revised and updated for a new edition in 2007. John is also issuing a revised edition of his popular Okanagan Wine Tour Guide this Spring; the substantial updates match the fast pace of a growing regional wine country that John has played a large role in developing and supporting.
A member of numerous wine societies and an award-winning home vintner, Schreiner has toured wineries in virtually all of the world's major wine regions. He is a graduate of the German Wine Academy and has judged in wine competitions in Canada and abroad.His wine writing has appeared Wine Access, Vines, Decanter.com, The National Post, The Globe and Mail, NUVO magazine, PlanItVancouver.com, AppellationAmerica.com, and GismondiOnWine.com. John is also chair of the selection committee of the Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival. He resides in North Vancouver, British Columbia. |
